Rustic wood ceiling in Pool house

Pool House. I immediately think Fresh Prince of Bel Air and ultra wealthy… the cute house in the back for guests. Maybe that’s why I like saying it 😉

Fresh Prince of Bel Air

We are not wealthy and our “pool house” is more like a shack of sorts. A cute shack? It is really a 12’ x 12’ room with a covered front porch and a small bathroom attached to the side (to keep wet bodies from running through my house!)

It is also my project which means BUDGET! Evan suggested using the pallet of weather worn 1x4s our neighbour gave us for the ceiling… I hesitated but was determined to figure out a way to make it work how I wanted. Then I remembered the Beach Blue stain I saw on display at Home Depot. Varathane had a display of beach inspired stains- I was smitten and stood there trying to brainstorm a project for which these gorgeous colours could be utilized.

I also had a pint and a half of Sunbleached stain already sitting in my garage. This stain is interesting, a bit difficult to mix thoroughly, and, in my experience, quite difficult to get consistent results but perfect for a project where you want varied colors.

I randomly stained boards different shades of each color and then chopped them down to pre-measured lengths based on the space between the rafters.

I had 4 different “plans” for seams so that we would get a good variation. I passed the boards up to the hubby and he used a nail gun to make quick of the work… oh how I love the nail gun.

Yay!

The project took 2 weekends to finish the main room and the bathroom and we are ecstatic about the end results!
